Abstract
In recent years, 180 to 200 thousand tons of black and red currant fruit have been produced yearly in Poland, 6065% of which are blackcurrants.
Annual fruit production of gooseberry is much lower and ranges from 20 to 40 thousand tons.
In older plantations, old European cultivars are cultivated whereas new plantings are mostly planted with the relatively new Polish cultivars Tiben and Tisel, the newest cultivars, Ruben, Ores and Tines, and the Scottish cultivars Ben Hope and Ben Gairn. ‘Rondom’ and ‘Red Dutch’ are the most important red currant cultivars with about 80% of the production with the remainder planted with Jonkheer van Tets and Rosetta. Because of the lack of new, productive cultivars with a high level of resistance to American powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca mors-uvae) gooseberry production is slowly decreasing.
The most commonly grown cultivar is White Smith. On some plantations, Invicta, Rzeszowski, Hinnonmaki Rot and the newest Niesłuchowski, Kamieniar and Pax are also planted.
Almost all fruit is destined for the processing industry where most is frozen before it is used to produce concentrated juices.
About 80% of the processed fruit (pre-cooled, frozen or processed) is exported, mainly to Europe.
