EFFECTS OF PRIMOCANE SUPPRESSION PROGRAMS ON WEED MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY OF ‘MEEKER’ RED RASPBERRY

Abstract
Several herbicides were evaluated for weed control and primocane management in ‘Meeker’ red raspberry production.
Dichlobenil alone applied during raspberry dormancy or in sequence with oxyfluorfen, carfentrazone, or glufosinate applied to newly-emerged primocanes gave excellent weed control (97 to 99%) after three years of applications.
Primocane suppression products used alone resulted in poorer weed control than when used after dichlobenil.
Carfentrazone alone (58% weed control) did not perform as well as either oxyfluorfen or glufosinate used alone (79 and 75%, respectively). While oxyfluorfen, carfentrazone, or glufosinate killed 90 to 98% of emerged primocanes, re-growth of new primocanes was slowest when oxyfluorfen was used either with or without dichlobenil, and was quickest with glufosinate.
All tested herbicides tended to reduce primocane number, but primocane suppression products did not reduce numbers more than dichlobenil treatment alone.
While herbicide programs did not significantly modify raspberry floricane height or lateral production, there was a trend toward more fruiting sites on treated canes compared to non-treated checks. This trend did not result in greatly improved berry yield compared to non-treated raspberries.
The treatments resulting in lowest berry yield were dichlobenil followed by oxyfluorfen, carfentrazone alone, and the two non-treated checks; dichlobenil followed by carfentrazone resulted in the numerically highest berry yield. Berry size was not affected by herbicide treatment.
It appears, therefore, that primocane suppression programs do not drastically alter ‘Meeker’ productivity.
