Abstract
The genus Thymus (Lamiaceae) is represented by 14 species in Iran.
Among the species grown in Iran, T. daenensis and T. kotschyanus, are widely used as herbal tea, flavouring agents (condiment and spice), carminative, digestive, antispasmodic, antitussive, expectorant and anti-inflammatory.
Aerial parts of T. daenensis and T. kotschyanus were harvested at pre-flowering, 50% and post-flowering stages and at three times in the course of the growing season under field conditions in two different sites.
Result showed T. kotschyanus had higher dry herbal yield than T. daenensis at two sites (2300 and 1050 kg/ha respectively). There was no significant difference between sites in respect to herbal yield in each species.
All plants in first cutting and post-flowering stage showed greater herbal yield than at other cutting times. T. daenensis had higher essential oil content than T. kotschyanus at two sites.
There were no differences among cutting times in respect of essential oil content.
Also two species in Qazvin site showed more oil content than in Alamut site.
The highest oil yield was obtained from first harvest at the post-flowering stage and the lowest at third harvest, regardless of the sites and species. T. kotschyanus had the higher essential oil yield than T. daenensis in sites and harvest stages.
