Abstract
Selected Curcuma species potential for herbal medicine were grown on bris sandy soil and assessed on their growth and yield performance.
The species assessed were C. xanthorrhiza, C. mangga, C. zedoaria, C. aeruginosa, C. heyneana and two types of C. domestica (turmeric). There were variations in the morphological characteristics of the species represented by the plant height, leaf number, pseudostem number, canopy width and leaf size.
Other morphological characteristics like leaf and stem color and the presence of red flush along the midrib on upper part of the leaf as well as rhizome color also showed variations.
The final record before plant senescence showed that the range of plant height was 81-183 cm; leaf number, 41-99; pseudostem number. 10-19; canopy width, 86-160 cm; leaf size: leaf length, 37-69 cm; leaf width, 12-18 cm.
There was presence of red flush along the midrib in some species evaluated.
The fresh rhizome yield ranged from 16.9 to 27.2 t/ha while the dry yield of rhizome ranged from 4.5 to 8.3 t/ha.
The growth duration was about 9-10 months except for one of the turmeric with the duration of 7 months.
