RESPONSE OF NARCISSUS TAZETTA GROWTH AND FLOWERING TO COLD STORAGE TREATMENTS

Abstract
Bulbs of Narcissus tazetta were stored at 5°, 10°, 15° and 20°C for 4, 6 and 8 weeks followed by 9°C until planting time on the first of September 1998. In the second season, bulbs were stored at 20°, 25° and 30°C for 12, 14 and 16 weeks followed by 15°C until planting time on the first of October 1999. Bulbs stored at 5°, 10° and 15°C for different durations failed completely to flower in the same season.
Vegetative growth and bulblet yield decreased as a result of storing bulbs at lower temperature than the room condition.
Yet, bulbs stored at 20°, 25° and 30°C for different durations produced flowers earlier than control by about 2-4 weeks and gave a paramount effect on the development of flower bud.
The development of flower bud accelerated.
Vegetative growth, e.g. dry weight of leaves and bulblets per plant improved, accompanying earlier sprouting.
The best treatment in this connection was 30°C for 12 weeks.
