Abstract
Preliminary studies were undertaken to determine if strawberry plantings suffer from winter cold in Central Poland.
Experiments were conducted on strawberry plants under field condition and in artificial freezing tests.
The impact of winter injuries on plant behavior depending on planting time, mulching and variety was also investigated.
Two commonly grown varieties – Senga Sengana and Surprise des Halles were included in these experiments.
The first results obtained showed that strawberry plants are rather sensitive to winter cold and may suffer from winters in Central Poland.
The most sensitive parts of the plant are flower buds.
Winter cold can injure or can kill them, causing crop losses.
Crop losses can also be caused by plant growth reduction as a result of cold stress.
Of two varieties compared in the field experiment – Surprise des Halles and Senga Sengana, Surprise des Halles is more sensitive to winter cold.
Its flower buds suffer from cold very easily.
A snow cover during a cold weather gives a very good plant protection.
