Abstract
The considerable research on plant resistance to frost has been thoroughly discussed in the extensive literature reviews, published in the last ten years.
Olien /1967/ reviewed the thermodynamics of freezing in the herbaceous plants.
Mazur /1966/, Meryman /1966/, discussed the general physical aspects of freezing in the biological material, Burke et al, /1975, and 1976/, Krasavtsev /1967/, Weiser /1970/ described freezing and freezing responses in the woody plants, Levitt /1972/, Olien /1967/, Santarius and Heber /1972/, Steponkus et al, /1977/ discussed molecular aspects of freezing damage.
Alden and Herman /1971/, Levitt /1966 and 1972/, Santarius and Heber /1972/, Siminovitch et al, /1967/, Tumanov /1967/, Weiser /1970/, characterised biochemical and physiological basis of winter hardiness in higher plants, Larcher /1975/ emphasized ecological aspects of frost resistance.

In front of such extensively surveyed world literature on the frost resistance, the present review will be aimed at discussion of similarities and differences in freezing and frost resistance of different plant types.
