Abstract
The effects of four photoperiod treatments (10/14, 12/12, 14/10 and 16/8h of light and dark intervals) on the growth femaleness and leaf gas exchange parameters of Cucumis melo groups Flexuosus and Dudaim were evaluated.
Under long day treatment (14 and 16h), plant length and total fresh weight of plants increased.
Short day conditions (12 and 10h) influenced branch number and female flowers more than long day conditions.
Melon varieties form female flower on lateral branches.
In this study, there were positive relation between branch number and female flower number for all genotypes. Flexuous genotypes produced more lateral branches in shorter photoperiod (12 and 10h) whereas dudaim genotypes revealed more branches in longer photoperiod (14h). Based on results flexuosus genotypes tend to form more female flower in 12 and 10h while more female flowers obtained for dudaim genotypes in 14-h photoperiod.
The differences existed in rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance following different day length.
The results show clearly a close relation between the femaleness under short day treatment and photosynthesis rate, in the other hand maximum value of photosynthesis rate (27.35 µmol m-2 s-1), for all genotypes was achieved in 12h day length and more female flower also obtained in 12h day length.
