Abstract
This paper provides a strategic supply chain management framework that addresses the impaired predictability of demand and supply in the fresh produce industry resulting from challenging economic times and climate change.
Building on the body of literature on the topics of fresh food issues and challenges, supply chain responsiveness and efficiency requirements, and difficulties arising from climatic or economic variance, the paper develops a conceptual framework to strengthen fresh produce supply chains in the face of potential instability and industry downturns.
The paper identifies major fresh food cases where supply chains have faced a variety of challenges.
Drawing upon the supply chain literature, a framework is developed that can be adopted to formulate a range of strategies for the fresh produce industry.
The responsive supply chain framework encompasses integrated upstream and down¬stream supply chain technologies, lean practices and sustainable strategies for fresh food producers.
The framework is flexible and holistic in its application, accom-modating supply chain innovation, technology, logistics competencies, risk manage-ment, carbon cost reduction and benchmarking, and is supported externally by appropriate industry bodies, government policies and regulation.
This paper provides a stepping stone for further research focussing on adapting practices in the broader agricultural sector to become increasingly resilient in the context of climate change challenges in particular.
