Abstract
The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) has developed many Standards on Phytosanitary Measures which provide relevant guidance to support eradication actions.
Examples are the A1/A2 Lists of pests recommended for regulation, phytosanitary procedures for inspections and tests, diagnostic protocols, the decision-support scheme for PRA and phytosanitary treatments.
In particular Standards regarding official control of major pests are important to assist NPPOs to draft pest-specific contingency plans.
Drafting a contingency plan is essential for a quick and effective response and nowadays many countries are drafting contingency plans for important pests.
Still uncertainties for successful eradication remain however due to biological, economical and logistical factors.
These uncertainties are elaborated and considered for Erwinia amylovora. This raises the question as to which critical points should be considered for an effective strategy in addressing this pest.
The feasibility of different control options for Erwinia amylovora is considered against the background of major trends in plant health in the EPPO region.
