Abstract
BTH (S-methylbenzo-1,2,3-thiadiazole-7-carbothiate) in the commercial preparation BION is an elicitor for resistance to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) in apple.
We determined the activity of ferulic acid (POX-f) peroxidase, phenolic acids and flavonoids in apple leaves treated with BTH before inoculation with E. amylovora. BTH treatment changed the response in plant-pathogen interaction by influencing POX-f activity and metabolism of phenols.
Phenolic acids, rutin and phloretin may be involved in defensive reactions of apple leaves against E. amylovora. BTH also enhanced the levels of chlorogenic and o-coumaric acids more than infection by the pathogen alone and decreased phloridzin content.
A decline of phloretin after BTH treatment was observed.
BTH changed phenol synthesis and induced POX-f, phloridzin, rutin, chlorogenic and o-coumaric acids for enhanced resistance of apple to E. amylovora.
