Abstract
Different sources of fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) resistance are available for breeding fire blight resistant apples.
The development of molecular markers closely linked to fire blight resistance loci is under way.
A combination of phenotypic testing and molecular analysis is actually underpinning the development of fire blight resistant cultivars carrying commercial fruit quality at the Research Station Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil (ACW). Breeding approaches include durable disease resistance against fire blight (E. amylovora), scab (Venturia inaequalis) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) combined with high fruit quality and good productivity.
Promising advanced selections are presented.
