Abstract
Consumption of broccoli with a rich bioactive composition and nutritive value is increasing steadily worldwide.
Nowadays, new commercial cultivars, Parthenon and Naxos, are being introduced in production areas (SE Spain) to replace underperformers and low-yield cultivars (i.e., Marathon, Nubia, Monaco, etc.) with a better adaptation to the climatic conditions.
In this work, we studied the yield parameters and composition (glucosinolates and vitamin C) of Parthenon and Naxos and used Nubia as a control cultivar and we also induced saline stress conditions (40 and 80 mM NaCl), representative of the current available irrigation water in Spain. Naxos showed the best results in terms of head-quality parameters and phytochemical composition (glucosinolates and vitamin C), with potential for replacing undeperformer cultivars (Nubia) in production areas with similar characteristics (i.e., semi-arid climate, high temperatures, and low quality of the irrigation water) of SE Spain, for producing broccoli of good quality.
