Abstract
The aim of this work was to determine the effect of day/night temperatures and light/dark cycles, on the accumulation of sugars and organic acids in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. Little Gem Ferro). To this effect, plants were grown in a growth chamber in controlled environmental conditions under different day/night temperatures regimes (23/15, 20/12 and 15/8°C) and different light/dark cycles (16/8, 12/12 and 8/16 h). The results showed that an increase in the length of the light period and temperature enhanced the concentration of soluble sugars, the light period having a greater influence in this respect than temperature.
With respect to organic acids, their concentrations increased when the light period was extended, except for citric and glutamic acids, for which the contrary tendency was observed.
An increase of the day/night temperature increased the concentration of citric and shikimic acids but had the opposite effect on the other organic acids.
