Abstract
Walnut is a tree species with value in forestation and nut production.
Therefore it is playing an important economic role in China.
Walnut production is important to rural economic growth particularly for farmers in mountainous areas in China.
However, there are problems in walnut production as follows: lower yields and lower incomes arising from old walnut production plantations, a diverse mix of cultivars in the new walnut production plantations and extensive rather than intensive management of the crop.
In order to improve walnut production, the following suggestions are: 1) scientific research and development, a) to realize the technological advances possible with nursery stock breeding of rootstock is needed; b) walnut postharvest processes (e.g., drying, storage, transport, marketing) need modernization by importing advanced technology; 2) policy to support modernization by supporting the organization of walnut management and the regional consolidation of plantings and management systems; 3) on farm extension and development.
To realize the full commercialization of walnut production requires extension and uptake of highly productive standard technologies and advanced management methods and creation of specialist walnut forestation expert team and special farmer teams capable of taking in developing and passing out improved knowledge and skills.
