Abstract
Investigations were carried out to assess the genetic variability for
21 morphological characters of 50 genotypes in two seasons at the Regional Research Station, TNAU, Virdhachalam.
The heterosis and combining ability were estimated in a set of 30 hybrids for 13 seedling characters.
The study revealed that the following aspects are important for further crop improvement programmes in cashew.
These aspects will be useful for further breeding programmes as well as maximization of nut production.

- The 100 nut weight expressed the highest phenotypic and genotypic variances.
- The GCV estimate was high for nut yield followed by number of perfect flowers per panicle and number of fruit set per panicle.
- The nut yield exhibited significant positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with the number of perfect flowers per panicle, fruit set per panicle and shelling percentage.
- Both additive and non-additive gene actions were expressed for F1 seedling characters viz., height of seedling at 30 days, leaf area of third leaf from bottom and fifth leaf from top at 60 days.
- Considering the heterotic expression and gca effects of the parents, three crosses viz., M10/4 × M33/3, M10/4 × M45/4 and M26/2 × and M 33/3 were selected as best hybrids.
These hybrids are maintained for further evaluation.
