COMMERCIAL MULTIPLICATION OF CASHEW THROUGH SOFT-WOOD GRAFTING IN HILLY AREAS OF TRIPURA

Abstract
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is one of the commercially important plantation crops in Tripura.
The agro-climatic conditions (warm humid subtropical) favour the multiplication of cashew through soft-wood grafting.
Huge variability exists in this crop due to seed propagation.
The seedling progenies are heterogeneous with respect to flowering, fruiting and other characteristics due to the cross pollinated nature.
To overcome this problem, study was conducted to standardize age of rootstock, season, and length of the scion on soft-wood grafting for early, uniform and quality yield. 45- to 60-day-old seedlings are found best root-stocks compared to older root-stock.
The maximum success of softwood grafting was obtained in the months of June, July and August with success of 85-91% compared to other months.
However, the growth rate of graft was found to be better in case of graft prepared during the months of June and July and success rates are much less in the cooler months like September, October, November, December and January, respectively.
The length of the scion significantly influences the percentage of sprouting as well as the growth behaviour of grafts.
Fifteen-cm long scions with brown colour showed highest growth compared to others.
