MANAGEMENT OF CASHEW APHID, TOXOPTERA ODINAE VAN DER GOOT (HOMOPTERA: APHIDIDAE) WITH SOME INSECTICIDES AND NEEM PRODUCTS

Abstract
Field efficacy of eight synthetic insecticides and two neem products was evaluated against cashew aphid, Toxoptera odinae van der Goot (Homoptera: Aphididae) for two seasons during January-February 2010 and 2011 at the Regional Research Station, Vridhachalam (11.30°N, 79.26°E and 42.67 m a.s.l.), Tamil Nadu, India on eight-year-old cashew trees of the VRI-3 cultivar in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications.
The results revealed that foliar spraying of profenophos, thiamethoxam, lambda-cyhalothrin was found to be highly effective by suppressing 98.5-100% aphid population at 7 days after spraying.
These insecticides also resulted in higher nut yield over control than the rest of the insecticides tested.
Other effective insecticides were dichlorvas, imidachloprid, dimethoate in the order of merit rendering 92.1-97.5% reduction of aphids.
Chlorpyriphos, carbaryl and neem oil were moderately effective killing 87.7-89.4, 84.2-88.2 and 72.7-78.9% aphid population.
NSKE 5% was least effective killing only less than 50% aphid population during both the years of experiments.
The yield among the treatments varied from a maximum of 1200-1360 kg/ha in profenophos to minimum of 800-840 kg/ha in NSKE as against mere 560-620 kg/ha nut yield realized in untreated control during first and second trials respectively.
Looking at the overall efficacy of different insecticides, profenophos, lambda-cyhalothrin and thiamethoxam were most effective for the management of cashew aphid.
