Abstract
Nine Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii Bolus ex hooker F.) cultivars (‘Ruby Red’, ‘Sunway’, ‘Denaellin’, ‘Primerose’, ‘Chacharelle’, ‘mperial’, ‘Blessing’, ‘Sangria’ and ‘Dune’) new to the Indian flower industry were cultivated under a naturally ventilated poly house in the northern dry zone of Karnataka (India) over a period of two growing seasons (2012 and 2013). Pooled data of two years (2012 and 2013) indicated that significantly higher plant height was recorded in ‘Blessing’ (47.21 cm) and it was minimum in ‘Denaellin’ (37.89 cm). Number of leaves per plant was significantly higher in ‘Primerose’ (33.00) and least was recorded by ‘Ruby Red’ (23.00). Maximum number of suckers per plant was recorded in ‘Chacharelle’ (7.00) and least in ‘Sunway’ (4.00). With respect to quality parameters, maximum stalk length was observed in ‘Imperial’ (68.32 cm), stalk girth in ‘Blessing’, ‘Denaellin’ and ‘Imperial’ (0.49 cm) and flower diameter in ‘Chacharelle’ (12.10 cm). With respect to flower yield, maximum number of flowers per plant and per m2 was recorded in ‘Primerose’ (28.53 and 171.15, respectively, and least flowers per plant and m2 were recorded in ‘Denaellin’ (19.96 and 119.63, respectively). ‘Sunway’, ‘Ruby Red’, ‘Imperial’, ‘Blessing’ and ‘Denaellin’ were more acceptable with respect to flower color.
Whereas with respect to flower shape, ‘Sunway’ stood first, followed by ‘Blessing’, ‘Chacharelle’ and ‘Primerose’. With respect to overall acceptability, ‘Sunway’ and ‘Blessing’ were the most acceptable followed by ‘Chacharelle’ and ‘Imperial’.
