Abstract
Completely and environmentally safe, natural polysaccharides can be used to form hydrogel coatings on the surface of plant organs to protect them against the adverse influence of external factors.
In addition to their protective effect, polysaccharides can have a stimulating influence on the growth and development of plants.
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of coating of twin-scale cuttings of Eucomis autumnalis on the yield and the quality of bulblets.
For coating of twin-scale cuttings, 1% (w/v) solutions of sodium alginate, gellan, carrageenan and xanthan were used.
Based on the results, the quality of the obtained bulblets significantly depended on the type of biopolymer.
Coating of twin-scale cuttings in a solution of carrageenan and gellan had a positive impact on the circumference and weight of the bulblets.
Furthermore, due to the use of these two polysaccharides, the bulblets had a more developed root systems.
The number of bulblets formed on the twin-scale cuttings did not depend on the type of coating.
