Abstract
Daylilies are popular ornamental plants for herbaceous borders and gardens and roadsides.
All wild species of daylilies are native to Asia, mainly China.
Many hybrids have been bred, with flowers ranging in color from white to purple and maroon and including rebloomers.
The reblooming daylilies have an extended bloom season.
The reblooming trait really adds to the ornamental value of daylilies.
How to get more reblooming daylilies is important for breeders.
A daylily is once blooming (OF) when the genotype is dominant, whereas a reblooming daylily (RF) has homozygous recessive genotype.
A single gene-Hemerocallis Terminal Flower 1 (HTFL1) is found to govern the reblooming trait.
The qRT-PCR was used to analyse HTFL1 expression in 4 hybrid combinations and F1 hybrids whose genotypes were clear by analysis of segregation ratio between OF and RF in hybridizing progenies.
The results indicated that low HTFL1 expression is associated with the reblooming trait in daylily.
Low HTFL1 expression is homozygous recessive (tt), high HTFL1 expression is homozygous dominant (TT), and medium HTFL1 expression is heterozygous (Tt). So reblooming daylily can be identified by HTFL1-marker assisted selection.
The application of HTFL1-marker in parent selection can aid in creating new reblooming daylilies.
