Abstract
For some Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus L.) series, cold treatment causes early blooming, even over short days.
The aim of this study was to analyze the vernalization effects in Sweet William flowering relative to the cycle and characteristics of the plant and verify the use of segregant material for commercial production and ornamental potential.
The experiment used cuttings obtained from a specimen of Dianthus barbatus L. which appeared amid a Dianthus hybrida ‘Melody’ matrix plant because of a genetic regression.
The test was conducted during the fall-winter period under greenhouse and refrigerated cooler conditions in a completely randomized design with five treatments which included four different vernalization periods and a control, each with six replicates.
The cold treatments were performed in a refrigerator at 5°C with an incandescent lamp providing an 8-h daily photoperiod.
The control treatment was composed of plants that remained in the greenhouse; they received 142 h of natural cold.
The vernalization specimens were kept in the refrigerator for various lengths of time, totaling 351, 438, 566, and 678 chilling hours.
The selected Sweet William material shows potential for garden cultivation because it presents a compact size and short stature.
The cold treatment prolonged the cultivation cycle of plants.
It was observed that longer periods under cold temperatures reduce the inflorescence size but increase the height of the stem.
