Abstract
Research and development to control mangosteen thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood) was done at Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center (CHRC) fields and farmer fields situated at Khaosaming, Trad, during October 2008-September 2010. Five methods to control mangosteen thrips were compared.
The methods were: T1) spraying the combination of 2 g imidacoprid plus 20 mL calcium/boron applied to the whole stem once every 2 weeks; T2) spraying the combination of 2 g imidacoprid plus 20 mL of calcium/boron before and after the flowering period; T3) pruned and watered inside canopy without the application of pesticide; T4) pruned and watered 50 cm above the canopy without the application of pesticide; and T5) watering once every week from before flowering to before harvesting without the application of pesticide and pruning.
The results showed that the damage done by mangosteen thrips was reduced for all methods tested in the research fields at CHRC. The combination of microclimate management and watering management inside the canopy increased relative humidity and gave an extra 10% reduction in damage from mangosteen thrips.
This method also reduced contamination of mealybug and black ants.
Trials carried out in farmer’s fields in Khaosaming, Trad, gave similar results.
However, the standard control method still gave more damage from mangosteen thrips, while other methods tended to reduce damage from mangosteen thrips, as found in trials in CHRC fields.
