Development of test guidelines and procedures for durian under Plant Varieties Protection Act B.E. 2542 according to ASEAN standards

This research was a study into the development of test guidelines and procedures for durian according to ASEAN standards before declaring a new plant cultivar to be protected under the Plant Varieties Protection Act B.E. 2542. The first draft of the test guidelines harmonized Thai test guidelines, which include 53 characteristics, and Malaysian test guidelines, which include 38 characteristics.
The research studied identification of botanical plant morphology to develop the test guidelines and drafted the test guidelines in line with the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) guidelines and brainstorming among experts from ASEAN countries.
The researchers tested the draft test guidelines to verify the common-knowledge cultivars of each plant species in the field.
Lastly, the researchers amended each characteristic and added example cultivars in the test guidelines.
Results from the research and development program generated test guidelines for durian that including 50 characteristics and reference cultivar information.
Later, the Department of Agriculture announced rules and procedures on the classification of the test guidelines for durian under the Plant Varieties Protection Act B.E. 2542 to ASEAN standards.
