Abstract
The objective of this research was to produce xanthones, a group of bioactive substances, specifically alpha-, beta- and gamma-mangostin, from mangosteen rind and to produce mangosteen products.
Extraction of xanthone was done by solvent extraction using ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and water.
Ethanol and methanol extracted 21.75-24.33 and 20.8-22.8% of the dried mangosteen rind, respectively.
A mixture of ethyl acetate and water (1:1, v/v) extracted 7.8-10.36% of the dried mangosteen rind.
Analysis of xanthone by using LC-MS showed that 1 g dried mangosteen rind contained 931.79 µg alpha-mangostin, 19.47 µg beta-mangostin and 18.7 µg gartanins.
One gram of the methanol extract contained 1079.72 µg alpha-mangostin, 21.10 µg beta-mangostin and 24.17 µg gartanins.
One gram of the ethyl acetate extract contained 782.74 µg alpha-mangostin, 19.69 µg beta-mangostin and 26.04 µg gartanins.
Toxicity tests of the bioactive compounds against cancer cells, MCF7-Breast cancer, showed that the average IC50 was 17.35 µg mL-1. Xanthone powder was manufactured from ethanol and water extract by using a spray dryer.
Mangosteen pulp was processed to produce instant mangosteen powder, which can be mixed with tea and coffee or used to make cookies and ice cream.
