Abstract
Uttaradit province in the lower northern region of Thailand is now the major growing area of ‘Long-lab-lae’ durian, especially Lab-lae district. ‘Long-lab-lae’ is a very popular cultivar among consumers.
Total soluble solids (TSS) is an important trait used as a quality indicator of ‘Long-lab-lae’ durian fruit.
However, mature durian fruits are very difficult to determine from their external appearance.
Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an interesting technology due to its nondestructive measurement process.
It is a technique to predict the chemicals rapidly and accurately, saving time and reducing the cost of the chemicals for analysis.
Therefore, this research aimed to study the determination of TSS at upper fruit stem level, lower fruit stem level and the center of durian fruit using a portable NIR spectrometer over the wavelength range of 700-1,100 nm.
The calibration equations were developed from correlation between NIR spectrum and TSS of flesh using multiple linear regression analysis.
From the results, the equation derived from the spectrum at the center of durian fruit provided the best TSS prediction of ‘Long-lab-lae’ with the highest multiple correlation coefficient (R) at 0.94, the lowest standard error of prediction at 2.95% and bias at -0.66%.
