Encapsulation of alpha-mangostin in cosmetic production by using nanotechnology

Abstract
Mangosteen extracts have demonstrated antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities.
Niosomes of alpha-mangostin were prepared by encapsulation using a mixture of Tween 60, cholesterol and ethanol and the thin film hydration method.
The suitable alpha-mangostin niosome formulation was composed of a 1:4 ratio of cholesterol (500 mg) and Tween 60 (2000 mg) in 10 mL ethanol.
The mixture was dried by using a rotary evaporator and subjected to desiccation in a vacuum desiccator for 3-5 h to generate the dried thin film.
The niosome particle size was approximately 213±26.47 nm, and the niosomes had a good polydispersity index (PDI). Alpha-mangostin niosomes were prepared for moisturizing cream and gel.
The particle size (mean) of the alpha-mangostin niosome was approximately 600-700 nm when consisting of 2.5-5.0% alpha-mangostin extract.
Skin permeation tests for alpha-mangostin niosomes from cream and serum formulations were also investigated in comparison with alpha-mangostin ethanolic solution.
It was found that 10-40% of alpha-mangostin in the niosome was released over a period of 24 h.
Niosome encapsulation of alpha-mangostin provides an economical and chemically stable product, as they were not easily hydrolyzed or oxidized during storage.
