Abstract
China is one of the major distribution areas of orchids in the world, with more than 1,700 species of orchids.
Orchids have a special cultural meaning in China, which is closely related to the social development.
With the improvement of living standards and the rapid development of science and technology, the orchid industry in China has developed rapidly and is full of vitality and has achieved considerable economic benefits and worthy scientific and technological achievements.
In this paper, the development history and present situation of orchid industry in China were summarized, and the present situation, protection and genetic diversity of orchid resources in China were introduced.
The development of orchid omics and the research progress of functional gene mining in China were emphatically discussed.
The breeding process and development prospect of China orchids were analyzed from polyploid breeding, bud selection, hybrid breeding, molecular marker-assisted breeding, transgenic breeding and gene editing, and the development of orchid propagation, cultivation and pest control was reviewed.
Finally, the future development direction of orchid research in China was discussed and prospected.
