Abstract
To explore the morphological characteristics of flower differentiation of Dendrobium, the morphological changes and phenological stages of flower bud differentiation and development of Dendrobium were observed by scanning electron microscope and free-hand anatomy. Dendrobium ‘FenDie’ was used as experimental materials.
The results showed that the process of flower differentiation of Den. ‘Fen Die’ could be divided into four stages: undifferentiated stage, flower bud differentiation stage, flower organ development stage and flowering stage, which lasted for 23, 44, 60, and 14 days, respectively.
The period of flower bud differentiation included three stages: growth cone transition stage, inflorescence primordium differentiation stage and floret primordium differentiation stage.
The floret primordium differentiation in the order of growth cone development, floret primordium, sepal primordium, petal primordium and gynostemium primordium.
The process of flower organs development could be divided into four stages: sepal and petal development stage, gynostemium development stage, labelum specialization stage and structural perfection stage.
Throughout the flowering process of Den. ‘Fen Die’, the differentiation and development of gynostemium and mentum were closely related to the speed of flower formation.
In addition, the flower differentiation process of Den. ‘Fen Die’ can be predicted by the ratio of the height of buds and flowers.
The differentiation starts when the buds swelled 0.3 cm, the inflorescence primordium develops at the height is 0.5-0.7 cm, and the flower organ development stage begins when the inflorescence height is more than 2 cm.
