Financial and design aspects of walnut agroforestry in the UK

The history of walnut production for nuts in the UK is presented based on trials planted as early as 1936 and research since 1986. Reflections are given on cultivar selection and management in the context of the desire for agroforestry and or regenerative agriculture approaches involving crops and or animals.
Financial spreadsheet analysis shows possible break-even points and ongoing gross margins for a range of configurations.
Yield optimisation of a potato and walnut oil agroforestry system could lead to over 86 adults being supported per hectare in terms of their caloric requirements.
Suggestions for further actions including farmer led research are outlined.
