Effect of twelve rootstocks on the scion ‘Pawnee’ in a 10-year-old orchard

Abstract
The pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) is native to North America and grows across a wide range of latitudes and longitudes in the United States.
Grafting onto an established rootstock is necessary to accelerate the pecan scion’s flowering and fruiting time.
However, it is challenging to breed or select an appropriate rootstock that is adapted to all pecan-growing regions.
To investigate the effects of different rootstocks on the growth and development of the ‘Pawnee’ scion, the USDA-ARS Pecan Breeding Program conducted an experiment using 12 seedstocks from different geographical regions.
Healthy, uniform seedling from open-pollinated seeds were planted in a field, containing four blocks, each consisting of five replicates in a randomized complete block design.
Field performance of 10-year-old grafted trees indicated that the effect of rootstocks on scion growth varied based on seedstock genotype and their origin.
Southern seedstocks generally performed better than northern ones, with taller plants, bigger trunks, and larger canopy.
Among the 12 rootstocks tested, two Mexican seedstocks, 87MX5-1.7 and 87MX1-2.2, showed vigorous growth considering as potential seedstocks for pecan growing regions that rarely experience freezing conditions.
The influences of the 12 rootstocks on scion performance provide valuable insights for rootstock selection and breeding goals in the pecan breeding program.
