Sys’Noix: a successful innovative system for the reduction of inputs in walnut orchards

Abstract
For several years, agriculture has seen changes initiated by both environmental awareness and societal pressure.
The transition to a more respectful production mode has been accelerated by French and European governmental directives.
In this context, the SENuRA has carried out a project from 2018 to 2023, called “Sys’Noix”, the objective of which is to reduce the treatment frequency indicator (TFI) (-100% herbicides, -50% fungicides, from -50 to -100% insecticides) while maintaining the economic sustainability of farms.
The study has shown that it is possible to grow walnut trees under physical barriers reducing TFI. Good results have been obtained on bacterial and fungal necrosis, on climatic events and yields while mixed results have been observed on insect pests.
However, the high cost of the infrastructure raises questions as to whether it can be installed on a large scale or not.
