Phenological and pomological comparison of ‘Diriliş’ and ‘Chandler’ cultivars

Abstract
This study was carried out to compare the new hybrid walnut cultivar ‘Diriliş’ with ‘Chandler’ cultivars in terms of phenological and important pomological characteristics.
Thus, a detailed insight into the traits and performance of the cultivars is presented.
The data were collected over a period of five years, during the growing seasons of 2018-2022. A total of 14 phenological and 12 pomological traits were examined.
The most notable plant traits of these cultivars were their late leafing date and high lateral bud flowering rate, with ‘Diriliş’ demonstrating 3-5 days later leafing compared to ‘Chandler’. Additionally, it was determined that ‘Diriliş’ reached harvest maturity about 18-21 days earlier than ‘Chandler’. The nut weight (13-14 g), kernel weight (7.0-7.5 g), and kernel percentage (52-54%) were measured for ‘Diriliş’, while ‘Chandler’ had values of 12-13 g, 5.7-6.3 g, and 47-49% for the same traits. ‘Diriliş’ had higher values for nut weight, kernel weight, and kernel percentage compared to ‘Chandler’. The study revealed that the walnut cultivars ‘Diriliş’ and ‘Chandler’ exhibited distinct phenological and pomological traits, with ‘Diriliş’ demonstrating a quite late leafing time and reaching harvest maturity earlier compared to ‘Chandler’. Furthermore, ‘Diriliş’ showcased higher values for some pomological traits in comparison to ‘Chandler’. These findings highlight the favorable traits and promising performance of ‘Diriliş’ in walnut cultivation.
