Effect of potassium thiosulfate on ‘Muscat of Italy’ grape yield and quality

Abstract
Potassium plays an important role in various cellular functions such as sugar and protein synthesis and tissue turgidity and affects fruit coloration and taste quality.
Grape berries exhibit a high demand for potassium accumulation, especially during the ripening process.
To investigate the effect of different doses of potassium thiosulfate (KTS) on the yield and quality of ‘Muscat of Italy’ grape cultivar, this study was conducted in the Khelidia region of North Tunisia during 2023. Four treatments were randomly applied in four replications: T1 (control), T2, T3 and T4 (0, 20, 30 and 40 L ha‑1 of KTS, respectively). KTS was applied under the dripper during the berry growth stage set period to 4 blocks and each block with 5 vines per treatment.
KTS treatments significantly improved the yield and cluster weight, with the highest yield given by T4. The KTS treatments also increased cluster length and width, with the highest values observed in T2. KTS applications resulted in improved berry length, width and weight, particularly with T4, while none of them had a significant effect on total soluble solids, acidity, and pH of the berry juice.
These findings highlighted the potential of potassium thiosulfate as a valuable fertilizer for commercial grapevine orchards, offering benefits for yield enhancement and grape size.
