Helichrysum patulum for postharvest management of Botrytis cinerea on nectarine (Prunus persica L. Bath) fruits

Abstract
Fruit diseases caused by fungi pathogen result in significant economic losses annually, that adds to global food security concerns.
Therefore, this study investigated the potential of Helichrysums patulum as an alternative control for postharvest management of Botrytis cinerea on nectarine (Prunus persica L. Bath) fruits.
Crude extracts were obtained using 95% ethanol and 70% acetone.
Rovral® WP was used as control in antifungal study.
Chemical profile of the extracts was obtained using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). All extracts of H. patulum exhibited considerable growth inhibition against B. cinerea in comparison to the commercial fungicide (Rovral® WP). Extracts obtained via ethanol showed the highest antifungal activity in a disc diffusion assay followed by acetone extract (41 and 27%, respectively) inhibition against B. cinerea. While acetone extracts showed high microbial effects than ethanol extracts in the in vivo tests (7.0 and 9.1 mm) lesion diameter, respectively.
Sesquiterpenoids were identified as the major class of compounds in both acetone and ethanol extracts of H. patulum. The abundance in chemical compounds of the acetone extracts was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of ethanol extract.
However, 3-(1-camphenyl) propylsaure-methylester, alpha-cadinene and viridiflorol were the most prominent compounds in all extracts.
