Exploring the susceptibility of tomato cultivars to Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, 1960 (Acari: Tetranychidae) in Burkina Faso

Abstract
Tomatoes are a regular ingredient in many culinary dishes in Burkina Faso.
But during its development, the tomato plant is subject to pressure from a number of pests, including mites.
In Burkina Faso, the red mite Tetranychus evansi is an invasive pest of Solanaceae that causes major yield losses in tomato production.
This study was carried out to help set up agroecological control strategies against T. evansi in Burkina Faso.
Ten tomato cultivars (‘MONGAL F1’, ‘JAGUAR+’, ‘COBRA26’, ‘CLN4398M’, ‘CLN4270D’, ‘CLN4270I’, ‘CLN4270B’, ‘CLN4270E’, ‘CLN4270F’ and ‘CLN4018G’), made up of locally marketed cultivars and cultivars studied as part of the SafeVeg project, were evaluated to determine their susceptibility to T. evansi infestation.
Each tomato cultivar was transplanted individually into 11 plastic pots, each pot being a replica.
Ten pots were infested and the eleventh remained as an uninfested control.
Five young, mated, gravid T. evansi females were placed on each plant, covered with muslin cloth that did not allow the mites to pass through.
The average number of mites per leaflet, leaf damage index and yield were assessed.
The results showed a high population of T. evansi on three cultivars, with ‘CLN4018G’ showing the most damage compared with the other cultivars. ‘JAGUAR+’ and ‘COBRA26’, marketed locally, and ‘CLN4398M’ from the SafeVeg project were the three cultivars that produced fruit yields.
These promising cultivars could be used to implement an agroecological control strategy against T. evansi.
