Effectiveness of plant-based edible wax on suppressing potato tuber sprout growth during ambient storage

Abstract
Potato tuber sprouting during postharvest storage is a major challenge for the potato industry.
Methods used to control this sprouting are eco-unfriendly and some are cost-ineffective.
Thus, the present study investigated the effectiveness of eco-friendly Citrashine® natural wax in suppressing sprout growth on potato tubers.
Tubers of two potato cultivars (‘Mondial’ and ‘Sifra’) were dipped in Citrashine® natural wax, air-dried and then stored at ambient storage for 12 days.
Control tubers were dipped in distilled water.
During ambient storage, the wax® significantly (p<0.05) delayed sprouting incidence compared with the control in both cultivars.
Wax-treated tubers of ‘Mondial’ and ‘Sifra’ had a sprouting percentage of 8 and 4% compared with the control which was 48 and 20%, respectively.
However, the application of wax® significantly induced decay incidence and increased mass loss in both cultivars compared with the control.
Dry matter and starch content did not differ significantly (p>0.05) between wax-treated and control in both cultivars.
These findings indicate that Citrashine® natural wax is an effective eco-friendly sprout suppressant for potato tubers.
