Effectiveness of the ANECO® as a new disinfectant in packinghouse against the main citrus postharvest pathogens

Abstract
Citrus is one of the most important commercial fruit crops in the world due to its high worldwide production and consumption.
However, citrus is susceptible to postharvest disease caused by fungi throughout various storage phases.
Therefore, the postharvest sanitization of citrus fruit before their distribution and commercialization is extremely important to avoid dissemination of the pathogen.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ANECO®, an HOCl-based solution, in the control of prominent citrus postharvest pathogens, specifically Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum, Geotrichum citri-aurantii, Alternaria alternata, and Phytophthora citrophthora. In vitro assessments involved exposing the conidia of each pathogen to various concentrations (1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mL L‑1) of ANECO® solutions for specific contact durations of 30 s, 1, 2 or 5 min.
The mortality rates of the conidia obtained was calculated according to the different concentrations of the product tested and the contact times applied.
At a concentration of 1.0 mL L‑1, the mortality rate reached 49% with a contact duration of 5 min.
Meanwhile, for the concentration of 2.5 mL L‑1 for 5 min, Geotrichum citri-aurantii presented a 100% mortality rate.
This rate also reached 100% for P. italicum, P. digitatum and Alternaria alternata at the concentration of 7.5 mL L‑1 for a 5-min contact time and from 2 min for Geotrichum citri-aurantii. ANECO® effectively inhibited G. citri-aurantii at low concentrations.
From this study, the ANECO® application could be recommended to improve fruit shelf life against exogenous pathogens.
Its impact on the environment, on human health and on fruit quality needs further studies.
