Abstract
To evaluate the performance of a new longan cultivar, ‘Fengdawanmi’, in Nanning, Guangxi, the phenology, productivity and fruit quality of ‘Fengdawanmi’ (introduced in 2017) were observed or measured, using the main cultivars, ‘Dawuyuan’ and ‘Shixia’ as controls.
The results showed that the male and female flowering stages of ‘Fengdawanmi’ were 7 days and 4 days longer than those of ‘Dawuyuan’, respectively.
Additionally, the early, peak and end of female blooming, as well as small fruit setting in ‘Fengdawanmi’ occurred 5 days, 4 days, 1 days and 4 days earlier than in ‘Dawuyuan’, respectively, while its maturity stage was 7 days later.
The fruit cluster weight, yield, brightness value, color saturation value, and the content of soluble solid, soluble protein and titrable acid in ripening fruit were significantly higher in ‘Fengdawanmi’ than in ‘Dawuyuan’. Moreover, ‘Fengdawanmi’ exhibited slower sugar loss and a longer fruit-hanging life, with soluble solid content remaining above 20% for nearly a month.
The aril of ‘Fengdawanmi’ contained significantly higher amounts of aroma components, terpenoids, and esters compared to ‘Shixia’, while its alcohols and ketones were significantly lower.
Notably, (Z)-
-ocimene levels in ‘Fengdawanmi’ were significantly higher than in ‘Shixia’ during the mature, late-mature, and sugar-withdrawal stages.
Additionally, methyl perillate and methyl acetate were unique aroma components of ‘Fengdawanmi’ during the sugar-withdrawal period.
Cultivation of ‘Fengdawanmi’ in Nanning demonstrated its characteristics of large fruit size, late maturity, high fruit quality, excellent flavor, slow sugar loss, and extended hanging life.
Therefore, this cultivar is suitable for large-scale promotion in Nanning and other regions with similar climatic conditions.
The findings of this study provide a reference for adjusting longan cultivar structure and extending the production period of longan in Guangxi.
