Abstract
Carbohydrates play a critical role in plant growth and development by serving as essential carbon skeletons for cell growth, proliferation, and tissue formation, as well as pivotal energy sources for metabolism, and signal substances involved in morphological construction and metabolism regulation.
Carbohydrates have been shown to play important roles in the flowering, fruit setting and fruit quality of litchi.
Over the past three decades, much progress has been made in identifying carbohydrate composition, dissecting their metabolism and understanding their physiological roles in litchi.
In this review, we summarize recent major advances in understanding of carbohydrates in litchi and raise open questions about their roles in growth and development.
These findings should aid in the understanding of carbohydrate metabolism mechanisms and serve as useful references for agricultural practices.
