Identification of pollen-part mutations conferring self-compatibility in Tunisian apricot accessions

Abstract
Self-(in)compatibility (SI) is a genetic barrier developed by flowering plants to prevent self-pollination and promote outcrossing.
SI is one of the most important traits in stone fruit breeding and particularly in apricot species.
In this context, self-incompatibility was analyzed over 125 Tunisian apricot accessions focusing on both self-pollination test and the genotyping of the S– and M-loci.
The self-pollination test and the amplification of the insertion of the SFB and ParMDO genes allowed us to identify for the first time within the Tunisian apricot germplasm two different types of pollen-part mutations (PPM) conferring self-compatibility (SC and m-haplotype). In fact, these data confirmed the self-compatibility of 15 accessions which present at least one or two self-compatible haplotypes (SC or m-allele or both). Moreover, the presence of both SC and its ancestor S8-haplotype in Tunisian apricot germplasm give strong support to the previous studies which confirmed that self-compatibility was introduced to North Africa from the Irano-Caucasian region.
Parallelly, the identification of the self-compatible ParMDO m-haplotype confirmed the presence of gene flow between the Western-European and the local North African apricot gene pool.
All these results may provide relevant information for apricot breeding and production.
