THE POSSIBLE ROLE OF SOIL DISINFESTATION IN THE TOTAL COMPLEX OF CONTROL MEASURES AGAINST FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F. SP. ALBEDINIS, “LE BAYOUD” OF DATE PALMS

"Le Bayoud", a detrimental vascular disease of date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) is caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. albedinis. The first disease locus was reported more than one houndred years ago in Marocco (valley of the Draa). Since than, the problem developed as an epidemic, in such a way that almost all plantations in Marocco and an important part of plantations in Western and Central Algeria are infested, resulting in death of millions of trees.

In the total control program for this disease, selection of resistant cultivars is of major importance.
However, to protect the healthy plantations for infection, an integration of control measures is necessary.
Very important is a systematic and careful clean-up of infested material.
In this total program, an efficient soil disinfestation of infested loci can help to accomplish the total program.

In view of the very typical problem, an overlook of possibilities and limitations for a successful fumigation is given.
