Abstract
Soil disinfection is one of the most important methods to control soil-borne diseases in Italy.
The essential goal is to destroy soil-borne pathogens before sowing or transplanting in order to be able consequently to grow susceptible species without risk of infection of their root system.
Various characteristics of the pathogens determine the method of soil disinfection which must be applied to destroy them and how effective it will be.
In this paper the most common methods used in Italy (steam sterilization, fumigation) will be discussed and the recent tendency will be elucidated.
Steam sterilization with the aid of a sheet covering the soil or via a network of buried drain pipes is a method suitable in Italy only for greenhouse application.
On the contrary the fungicidal and nematocidal activity of different fumigants is largely used to disinfect soils in greenhouses and in open-air.
The crops more commonly fumigated are: carnation, rose, tomato, strawberry, eggplant, carrot.
Data on consumption of the different fumigants and on the area disinfected with various methods are presented.
