Abstract
Surveys for virus diseases of apricot in South-East Italy have shown that whereas virus diseases are relatively frequent in private gardens, they rarely exceed 5% in commercial orchards.
Several viruses were identified either by mechanical transmission to herbaceous hosts and/or by immunoenzymatic (ELISA) and immunoelectron microscopic (IEM) procedures.
Members of the Ilarvirus group, i.e. apple mosaic (ApMV), prunus necrotic ringspot (PNRV) and prune dwarf (PDV) viruses, and apple chlorotic leaf spot closterovirus (ACLSV), were found associated with specific syndromes.
Plum pox potyvirus (PPV) was discovered in young orchards of cv.
Tyrinthos.
It was ascertained that PPV was introduced in the area with infected planting material from extra-regional nurseries.
