Abstract
There are several potential avenues to improving fruit tree breeding in general and avocado in particular.
We describe here the results of two approaches applied for avocado.
We describe here the results of two approaches applied for avocado.
Estimation of variance components and the heritabilities of nine avocado traits are presented.
The results point toward the existence of statistically highly significant components of non-additive variance in all traits.
The application of the conclusions from these results to the selection of parents for the planned crosses are discussed.
The results demonstrate that the application of DNA Fingerprints, as genetic markers, allows for the identification of cultivars, races and pollen donor parents.
Genetic analysis of a progeny resulting from a cross between Pinkerton and Ettinger revealed the existence of two linked bands and one band allelic to one of them.
Various usages of this system for improving breeding programs are discussed.
