Abstract
Considering the suitability of the environment in various areas in Southern Italy as well as good market trends, avocado (Persea americana Mill.) cultivation could develop, as it already has in other Mediterranean countries.
In this regard, this research presents data on the maturity process of 6 of the most important avocado cultivars introduced in Italy (‘Bacon’, ‘Fuerte’, ‘Hass’, ‘Nowels’, ‘Rincon’ and ‘Zutano’). In the climatic conditions of the Eastern Sicilian coast, the period in which each of the above mentioned cultivars reaches an acceptable taste has been ascertained as well as the applicability of the dry-weight method as an alternative to the oil-test, as a reliable maturity index.
