Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the effects of 2,4-D and ethephon on the quality characteristics, ethylene production rate and tissue structure of mung bean (Vigna mungo) sprouts.
Mung bean seeds were sprouted in a growth chamber and treated with 2,4-D (25 mg/L) and ethephon (10 μL a.i./L) 48 hours after germination.
The sprouts were harvested 48 hours after treatment.
Compared to the control, treated sprouts had shorter root and hypocotyl, and larger hypocotyl diameter.
Vitamin C contents of the treated and control sprouts were not significantly different.
Sprouts treated with 2,4-D had a storage life of two days when compared to two weeks for ethephon and control sprouts.
Rate of ethylene production was highest in the ethephon-treated sprouts throughout the storage period.
Treated sprouts had larger hypocotyl diameter due to radial expansion of cells.
Ethephon appeared favorable over 2,4-D in producing better quality sprouts.
