Abstract
The possible role of abscisic acid (ABA) in low temperature sweetening of potatoes was investigated.
Sugar composition and ABA in tubers of Norchip, a cultivar that sweetens at low temperature, and ND860-2, a line tolerant of low temperature, were studied at 4 and 10C. Rapid increases in sugars within a couple of days of harvest occurred at the same time as did a sharp increase in ABA, particularly in the medullary tissue.
The ABA spike was more prevalent in Norchip at 4C than in ND860-2. Changes in ABA in the lateral and apical bud areas were less dramatic.
Addition of 10 mM ABA to potato callus at 3C resulted in higher fructose and glucose particularly in ND860-2. Respiration rates were similar for both potato lines.
