Abstract
Two triploid highbush blueberry clones which have high percentages of unreduced pollen were crossed to generate 31 hybrid seedlings.
These seedlings were evaluated for chromosome number, pollen stainability, and fertility.
Chromosome numbers ranged from 2n=5x-4=56 to 2n=6x+2=74. Pollen stainability ranged from 16% to 76% on 28 clones.
Female fertility as estimated by seed set in crosses to 6x V. ashei (cvs. ‘Brightwell’, ‘Delite’, and ‘Tifblue’) ranged from 6.0 to 68.5 per fruit, and averaged 24.8 seed per fruit.
Limited crosses of the 6x plants with 4x highbush selections produced comparable seed set.
Triploidy may be useful in facilitating the transfer of genes from 2x and 4x ploidy levels into hexaploid germplasm.
The manipulation of V. corymbosum at the hexaploid level opens new avenues for transferring quality traits from V. corymbosum to V. ashei, and in manipulating V.corymbosum at the 6x level.
