Abstract
In 1991 a project was initiated to develop a cranberry variety suitable for Finnish conditions.
The cranberry (V. macrocarpon) was successfully crossed with both the small cranberry (V. microcarpum) and the lingonberry (V. vitisidaea). The timing of flowering was affected by keeping some of the small cranberries in cold storage and some of the cranberries in a greenhouse.
A new isolating method has been developed for the small cranberry, where acryl tubes are used instead of cloth traps.
The first hybrid plants were sown in the spring of 1992. Cranberry seeds were also treated with colchicin to produce tetraploid plants.
